I believe that it’s incredibly important to have some things in life that are just fun. Particularly when the world can feel a little overwhelming.
To that end, for the last limited edition Nouveau series pedal of 2024, I bring you TANGENTIA.
My gloriously fun filled envelope filter.
Of all the different sounds in the pedal world, few other effects cause me to radiantly beam, like a good envelope filter.
But TANGENTIA does more than your average envelope filter.
Her all analog circuitry offers a range of ultra-useable and incredibly tweak-able sounds.
From the bell bottomed, psychedelic funk glory of auto wah sounds… to ultra-short attack and decay settings resulting in clipped staccato synth sounds…. To setting the attack time short and the decay time long which creates a swift shift (up or down) to the filter frequency, then a very gradual, volcanic bubbling release back up to your original frequency.
TANGENTIA is a veritable toolbox of remarkable sounds you didn't know you needed.....until you plugged her in.
It’s like opening a giant bag of sonic candy and tasting all the different flavors!
She sounds phenomenal on 6 string guitar and bass guitar (and synth, and horns, and drums, and vocals).
Her top mounted low profile toggle switch allows you to select which direction the filter moves in. Up (for low to high frequency sweeps) and down (for high to low sweeps).
The sensitivity control sets how quickly the filter “bites”. Whether the filter just hints at the slightest of frequency shifts or dramatically pulls every frequency down (or up) to the peak of the envelope.
The resonance control enables you to set the peak frequency resonance.
The next two controls are really where the fun begins…..
Attack and Decay. I spent an age getting these dialled in perfectly.
They control how long or short it takes for the filter to sweep up (or down) in frequency (Attack), and how long it takes for the frequency shift to decay, at the other end of the envelope (Decay).
She has an internal trim-pot that you can adjust to set the master volume.
By using all these controls, you can get an almost limitless number of sounds.
I know I often say it, but for this pedal I cannot emphasize enough: all the controls are super interactive.
Adjusting one will have an impact on the other controls.
I recommend setting aside at least an afternoon to experiment with this mad scientist’s lab of envelope filter frequency fun. I guarantee you’ll be grinning from ear to ear!
