One combination of effects that is enormously useful and useable but seems to fly under the radar of most guitarists is the combination of using a fixed wah and overdrive together.
Filtered overdrive left an indelible imprint on my young ears.
Hearing Dire Straits "Money For Nothing" at age ten.... my mind and my ears exploded when that absolutely volcanic guitar sound poured out of the grooves on the record my Dad had brought home... Utterly mystified by what could create that glorious sound...
Fast forwarding to my teenage years and a deep love of Faith No More – their hit “Epic” had just come out and that single led me to their album “The Real Thing”.
All over the album, Jim Martin’s remarkable guitar playing brought a unique and incredibly heavy metal infused rhythm style to the fore. His sound was unique too – it emphasised the aggression of his riffs.
It took me a few years to get to the bottom of that sound – but finally it was revealed in a guitar magazine – he used a half-cocked wah pedal into an overdriven Marshall amp.
The result = Glorious.
The use of a sweep-able resonant bandpass filter (wah) with overdrive wasn’t limited to Jim Martin and Mark Knopfler – artists like Carlos Santana and Brian May all utilized the concept of pushing certain frequencies whilst cutting others and feeding this “EQ’d” sound into an overdriven amplifier.
Ionium can nail these sounds.
The artists I mention all utilized this effect in quite a pronounced way. Which got me thinking…. What if you could choose how much or how little of the EQ’d sound you incorporated into the overdriven sound…. an ultra dial-able bandpass filter running into an incredible, all FET, overdrive....
Thus, Ionium was born.
