An Utterly Glorious, 100% Original, 8-Stage OTA Phase Pedal
Phasers have a special place in my heart. They’re such a wonderfully broad flavor of effect.
From the pulse-y tones of Dave Gilmour to Edward Van Halen’s “swoosh” on the outro of “Eruption”, to the almost Leslie-ish tones elicited by the Univibe.
This love is the reason the first pedal I ever released was the Moon Phaser.
The Moon Phaser was a six stage FET based design.
But matched FET’s are not the only way to achieve phasing nirvana…..
There’s a totally different approach using devices called “Operational Transconductance Amplifiers” (Or OTA’s, for short).
OTA phasers give a very different sound to FET based phasers.
More chewy. More “jet-like”.
I’m excited to share with you my first OTA based phaser design:
SOLARIA.
Quite possibly the most versatile phaser ever designed.
Offering the traditional controls of Velocity and Mix, you can blend as little or as much of the effect as you'd like. Velocity allows you to choose from a slow crawl right through to an ultrafast bubbling.
Things start to get very interesting when we turn our attention to the other controls: Resonance and Dimension.
“RESONANCE” allows you to add some of the phased signal back into itself – making the phasing sound super pronounced. Everyone will know you’re using a phaser with this control turned up!
“DIMENSION” is a completely original control. I drew influence from the “Trajectory” control from my Moon Phaser design. With the Dimension control wound back, your phase sound is deep and pulse-y, with it wound forward the sound becomes lighter and shimmery.
Utilizing both Dimension and Resonance controls opens the door to pretty much any phase sound you could imagine.
SOLARIA is a totally original 8 stage design. Most phasers are only 4 stage designs (Phase-90/ Small Stone). Offering double the stages translates into much deeper, immersive phase tones.
It just sounds more glorious-er!
